Hedgehogs have been around for millions years but in recent years their numbers have plummeted and they are now under threat of extinction. They seem to be doing better in urban areas rather than the countryside so our garden spaces are really vital for their future survival.
How can you help?
Leave the leaves - don’t tidy up too much this autumn and leave some piles of leaves. This provides nesting material for hedgehogs as well as providing habitat for the insects that they like to eat.
Think like a hedgehog - can they get in and out of your garden? They travel up to 2km a night looking for food.
Do you have any safe access to shallow water?
Avoid using chemicals such as slug pellets
If you have a bonfire build it on the same day it is going to be lit. A big pile of wood might seem like a perfect refuge for a hedgehog!
Check for hedgehogs before strimming
Consider installing a hedgehog house as there are so few safe places for them to shelter
If you think there are hedgehogs in your area consider making a feeding station with dog or cat food available. If it’s inside a box with a flapped entrance it’s less attractive to rats who like a clear run with no obstacles.
They will come out of hibernation from time to time during the winter to feed and drink.
A WhatsApp group ‘Helping Hedgehogs’ has been set up to share information and to record any local sightings.
If you do see a hedgehog please let us know as it’s really useful to build up a picture of how they are doing.
If you’d like to join the group, point the WhatsApp camera at this QR code and you will be added to the group automatically. Or write to Alison Jenkins, the group admin, c/o hello@growbatheaston.co.uk.
If you don’t want to join the group but would like to report a sighting, Alison would still love to hear from you.
